
John Bauer
Chief Counsel, Regulatory Affairs | NAIC
John Bauer serves as the Chief Counsel for Regulatory Affairs at the NAIC. He re-joined the NAIC in December 2008 following several years of legal and compliance experience in the insurance industry. In his current role, Mr. Bauer advises NAIC members on complex regulatory and legislative issues and assists in developing legal strategy on key issues impacting the NAIC. He is currently active in areas such as insurance holding company and insurance group issues, confidentiality and information sharing, cybersecurity, and federal legislation affecting state insurance regulation.
Before returning to the NAIC, Mr. Bauer was Senior Vice President and Senior Legal Counsel and Head of Compliance for the Americas with Swiss Re from June 2006 through December 2008. In this role, he coordinated a regional network of legal and compliance professionals charged with managing regulatory and corporate compliance across the Americas.
From August 2003 through June 2006, Mr. Bauer served in several roles with GE Insurance Solutions, including Global Compliance Counsel and Managing Counsel for Product and Regulatory Services. Mr. Bauer began his insurance legal career with the NAIC, where he was Associate Counsel from February 1999 through July 2003. Prior to joining the NAIC, Mr. Bauer was a judicial law clerk at the United States Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Bauer received an H.B.A. in international affairs and political science from Marquette University and his Juris Doctorate from George Washington University Law School. He is a member of the bar of the states of Missouri and Virginia.

Matteo Carbone

He is internationally recognized as an insurance industry strategist with a specialization on innovation. Matteo is author and world-renowned authority on InsurTech - ranked among top international InsurTech Influencers - and he has spoken to audiences in twenty different countries. He published the first bestseller dedicated to InsurTech: "All the insurance players will be insurtech".
Matteo has advised more than 100 different players in ten markets around the world and has wide insurance experience which includes set up of industrial and commercial plans, growth strategy definition and support in the start-up of new initiatives, digital strategy development, insurance products innovation, channel strategy and commercial model definition, startups mentorship and advice M&A deals.
Before creating the IoT Insurance Observatory, he spent eleven years in Bain & Company's Financial Service practice.

John Doak
Commissioner | Oklahoma Insurance Department
In January 2011, John D. Doak was sworn into office as the 12th Insurance Commissioner of Oklahoma. In 2014, voters awarded Commissioner Doak's unparalleled performance with a second term and a record 77 percent of the vote.
Commissioner Doak is an active member of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, where he serves on the Property and Casualty Insurance (C) Committee, as the Chair of the American Indian and Alaska Native Liaison Committee, as a member of the International Insurance Relations (G) Committee, and as Midwest Zone Secretary and NAIC Executive Committee member for 2016. Commissioner Doak also shapes important national insurance policy issues as a member of the Government Relations (EX) Leadership Council.
Commissioner Doak is a graduate from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science who, shortly after college, launched a successful insurance business in Tulsa. As his career thrived, Doak worked in numerous roles within the insurance industry. He served as an executive for several risk and insurance service companies including Marsh, Aon, HNI and Ascension.

Chris Downer
Associate | XL Innovate
Chris Downer is an Associate at XL Innovate focusing on insurtech investments in North America, Europe and Asia. He is responsible for due diligence and deal sourcing. Chris is a board observer at Pillar Technologies, an end-to-end environmental monitoring solution for construction sites and Stonestep, which provides microinsurance as a service in emerging markets.
Before joining XL Innovate, Chris was an Associate in the Alternative Investments and Manager Selection Group within the Investment Management Division of Goldman Sachs. During his five years at Goldman, he developed special expertise in emerging markets and Asia and worked in both the New York City and London offices. Chris graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College, with a BA in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and a minor in History. Outside of XL Innovate, Chris is a dedicated cyclist, avid New York Rangers fan and American History buff.

Christa Dubill

Christa Dubill has a shelf full of Emmy awards for her story telling and anchoring, but she'll tell you each one of those awards started with a random conversation at a random time of day. "The best stories don't start from a press release, and most don't end with one either," says Dubill. She has been a news anchor and reporter since 2001. She is consistently recognized for her abilities to handle breaking news and the relationships she builds with her viewers. She is one of the top performers on social media in the region and continues to evolve as the platforms change. The one constant in Dubill's career is her curiosity for more information and understanding. She says interest in learning more than what's already known is what makes anyone great at their job.

Nick Gerhart
Chief Administrative Officer | Farm Bureau Financial Services
Nicholas C. (Nick) Gerhart, J.D., M.H.A., joined FBL Financial Group as Chief Administrative Officer in January 2017. In this role, Gerhart has responsibility for enterprise strategic planning, government relations, human resources and health services, among other administrative functions.
Gerhart served as the Insurance Commissioner for the State of Iowa from February 2013 until December 2016. During his time as Commissioner he was very involved at the NAIC and served on the Executive Committee, Chair of the Life and Annuity (A) Committee and was appointed to the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance. Gerhart appeared on CNBC to discuss health care reform and was frequently quoted in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. He created an investment educational program, "Iowa Fraud Fighters" and led the team that created the Global Insurance Symposium. He spent time mentoring startup companies throughout the world and helped the NAIC deal with the challenges of regulating in the world of innovation and change.
Prior to that, he worked at Sammons Financial Group and American Equity Investment Life Insurance Company. He earned his law degree and health law certificate from St. Louis University School of Law and a Masters of Health Administration from St. Louis University School of Public Health. He also earned a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa. Gerhart is an active community leader and currently serves on the boards of the Homestead and ChildServe, and acts as a mentor in the Community Connect program through the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute.

Brian Hemesath
Managing Director | Global Insurance Accelerator
Brian Hemesath is the Managing Director of the Global Insurance Accelerator. He is responsible for the overall success of the program and ongoing support of the portfolio companies.
He has built a career around technology startups, having been a founder and co-founder of several businesses. He successfully exited two of his own companies in 2010 (Diligent) and 2012 (Catchwind).
Diligent was a boutique web development business that he ran with his brother, Eric, for just shy of a decade. The firm worked with local design talent and supported around 120 clients, mostly based in Central Iowa. In a pre-WordPress era, Diligent created its own content management system and built a business model around the platform.
Brian was a co-founder of Catchwind, which helped retail and marketing agencies operate and manage SMS marketing campaigns. Catchwind had a proprietary technology platform and worked closely with mobile carriers and message aggregators to deliver solutions.
In 2012, Brian helped get a ticketing startup off the ground while working out of Startup City (local incubator). The startup helped the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival successfully sell over 8,000 tickets in 3 minutes and 22 seconds. This feat was acknowledged by the Governor of Iowa in comments made at the 2013 Pig Pardoning.
He founded and still advises VolunteerLocal as it grows and continues to help events all over the world effectively manage volunteers.
Brian has a Computer Engineering degree from Iowa State University.

Leland Holcomb
Scout, Research Analyst | Hartford InsurTech Hub
Leland is the Scout and Investor Readiness lead for the Startupbootcamp powered Hartford InsurTech Hub. Leland performs market research to help identify insurtech trends, sources innovative insurtech companies, and assists startups in their insurtech accelerator through the investment process.
Prior to joining the Hartford InsurTech Hub, Leland worked as a Global Fellow on the India deal team with Patamar Capital, an impact investment venture capital fund making investments in companies that improve the livelihoods of the working poor in South and Southeast Asia. While with Patamar, Leland also focused his efforts on strategic consulting and project development with regional micro-finance organizations, SKS Microfinance and Samhita MFI.
Prior to working in impact investment, Leland worked as a legal assistant in a business and bankruptcy law firm and as a project coordinator for Sonoma County's Economic Development Board where he developed and managed programs and produced economic reports supporting local business in Sonoma County, California.
Leland graduated from Kenyon College with a degree in Political Science with concentrations in Public Policy and Humane Studies. He has also earned certifications in Venture Deals and Social Enterprise.

Karen Hornig
Executive Director | NIPR
Karen Stakem Hornig was appointed Executive Director of the NIPR in May 2014 by the NAIC Board of Directors. Hornig has served as Deputy Insurance Commissioner for the State of Maryland beginning in 2008, where she assisted in the development of the agency's legislative package, managed the operations of the Maryland Insurance Administration, and oversaw the implementation of State Based Systems (SBS) in Maryland. She was also an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law and served as Chief Legal Counsel for the Baltimore Police Department. Hornig received her B.A. in History from the Notre Dame University of Maryland and her Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law.

Richard McCathron

Rick brings 25 years of P&C experience to his role as Hippo's Head of Insurance. Rick is a Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter and a Certified Insurance Counselor and has held senior executive positions at well-respected insurance companies including First Connect Insurance as its President & CEO, Superior Access Insurance as its President & CEO and Mercury Insurance Group (NYSE-MCY) as its Regional Vice President. David Altmaier

David Altmaier was appointed as Florida's Insurance Commissioner on April 29, 2016, by the Financial Services Commission. He leads a 292-member team at the Office of Insurance Regulation (Office), overseeing a complex insurance marketplace in a state with one of the highest catastrophe exposures for hurricanes.
Altmaier began his public service career with the Office in 2008, serving in various roles within the P/C business unit. These included Chief Analyst; Director of Property & Casualty Financial Oversight; and Deputy Commissioner of Property and Casualty Insurance, which had the responsibility for the daily activities of the Property & Casualty Product Review and Financial Oversight business units.

Doug Ommen
Commissioner | Iowa Insurance Division
Doug Ommen was appointed by Governor Terry Branstad as Insurance Commissioner in January 2017, after serving as Interim Commissioner since December 2016. Ommen has a strong and varied public service background. Ommen's dedication and desire to serve the public began in seeking justice for victims of fraud in the Missouri Attorney General's Office, where as an assistant attorney general and then as chief counsel, he led the fight to protect consumers over the course of three decades. Ommen obtained his law degree in 1985 from the Saint Louis University School of Law, and is licensed to practice law in both Iowa and Missouri.

Raymond Farmer

Raymond G. Farmer was appointed by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley to serve as Director for the South Carolina Department of Insurance on November 13, 2012. With more than 40 years' experience, Farmer earned his bachelor's degree in insurance from the University of Southern Mississippi and earned his law degree from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School. In 2012, Farmer was awarded the Herman Hass Award by the Independent Insurance Agents of Georgia for service to the insurance industry. Also in 2012, he received a Presidential Citation for Outstanding Service to the insurance industry from the Professional Insurance Agents of Georgia. Recently, Farmer received the 2014 Industry Person of the Year from the Independent Agents and Brokers of South Carolina.

Eric Cioppa
Superintendent | Main Department of Professional & Financial Regulation Bureau of Insurance, President-Elect | NAIC
Eric A. Cioppa is Superintendent of the Maine Bureau of Insurance, one of five agencies within the state's Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. Cioppa joined the Bureau in 1988 as a statistician. He then served as supervisor of the Workers' Compensation Section prior to becoming Deputy Superintendent in 1998. He was unanimously confirmed as Superintendent in September 2011. Eric currently serves as a member of the Maine State Employee Health Commission and has performed various roles on working groups of the NAIC. He holds a bachelor's degree from Potsdam State University and an MBA from Clarkson University.

Julie Mix McPeak
Commissioner | Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance, President | NAIC
Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak was appointed by Governor Bill Haslam to lead the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance in January 2011. Before being named to lead the department, McPeak practiced as Counsel to the insurance practice group of law firm Burr & Forman LLP. She also served as the Executive Director of the Kentucky Office of Insurance (KOI). Before her appointment as Executive Director, she spent nine years as an attorney for KOI, the final five as general counsel. She also served as general counsel to the Kentucky Personnel Cabinet. McPeak received her J.D. from the University of Louisville, School of Law in 1994. She is a 1990 graduate of the University of Kentucky, where she received her B.B.A., With Distinction, in Marketing.
